GoGlobal is a project that started at the RCA in 2005 aiming to bring together staff and students from top global design institutions for educational cross-cultural collaborations aimed at tackling regional or national scale issues. Our objective is to bridge the policy to implementation gap by using design thinking focused through cross cultural interdisciplinary design teams. GoGlobal 2014 brings together staff and students from the Royal College of Art and Imperial College’s Innovation Design Engineering( IDE ) masters programme and postgraduate students from a range of design and engineering programmes at Shenkar College of Design and Engineering in TelAviv. Staffs at Shenkar have been developing a range of important projects over several years and our collaboration brings these together for peace of design. The purpose of our three-week project is to work with a diverse range of crafts people in Israel and Palestine who have opportunities for design thinking to generate social and economic benefit.
This year we was assigned with the area named Harduf. In Harduf we collaborate with a rehabilitation center named Hiram which is an institute trying to help a range of mental and emotional disorders find their pace of life through getting them involved in making and arts. After a week survey, meeting and discussion with staffs and workers, we setup three priorities goal which are 1. Brand identity 2. Cooperation between three different workshops, textile, metal and ceramic. 3 New packaging.
First Stage : Research, Discussion& Idea Generation
Harduf is a renowned place in Israel by its organic agriculture and nature living style. They export organic food to all the country and people also will come to this place for tour. Besides this, Hiram in Harduf is also a well-known institution for emotional and mental disorders with a whole new approach to release their pressure, that is healing through making. Hence, after carefully and thoroughly research, disscusion and idea generation, we at the end chose organic life stytle and Healing through Making as our main theme for three different workshops.
Stage Two : Working Progress in Three Different Workshops
After we decided our direction, we once again tried to expend ideas as much as possible searching for design opportunities. We do the experiment and create real objects to verify our ideas. Then discuss and refine ideas again for the day after.
Final Phase : Make It Happen
In the last week we concentrate our attention on a few targets from previous stage's expanding and try to make it happen whith in 5 days.
There are total ten IDE&Shenkar students groups assigned with ten different area to work with local institution and workshop. Each area has their own issues, challenges, culture, stories and needs. We stay for three weeks to contribute our abilities, knowledge and experience to them, and of course, we learnt a lot from them as well. Here presents all the achievements have beed done by all the Shenkar& IDE student.
